To master light is to master photography, and nowhere is that truer than in the genre of landscape photography. This workshop will look at what makes good light for landscape photographs and how a photographer can best capture that light. This experience will include hands-on assistance in the field as well as in the classroom. Shooting in various conditions of light and exploring proper digital technique and workflow for landscape photography is designed to help participants realize their photographic visions, from field to finished image.
This workshop is a combined field and classroom workshop with 50 percent of the time in the field and 50 percent of the time in the classroom. Field shoots will provide the subject matter for daily studio sessions in which the instructor will demonstrate post-processing techniques using Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. Field instruction will explore the concepts of choosing a vantage point for a landscape, capturing place, proper camera technique for printmaking, using filters to expand dynamic range, and much more. Classroom discussions will include issues related to print resolution, color space, using ICC Print Profiles, paper/media selection, image sharpening for print output, and editorial post-processing manipulation.
Each participant will work on their own images and have the opportunity to make several 8Å~10 test prints and a single 12Å~18 finished exhibition quality fine art print that evoke the photographer’s excitement and vision as first experienced in the field. Throughout the workshop, the instructor will combine field exercises and technical demonstrations with group critiques and one-on-one instruction, resulting in participants’ increased understanding and enjoyment of photography, the creative process, and the natural world.
