Chimney Swift expert Ron Windingstad is coming to Freedom Park, and he can tell you all about it! In this presentation you will not only learn about these fascinating birds, but also some things you can do to help. The Chimney Swifts breed across much of eastern North America and are often referred as “flying cigars” because of their short, stout bodies and long, pointed wings. Changes in chimney construction and development of modern heating methods have greatly reduced the availability of nesting and roosting sites for swifts, and consequently their numbers. About Ron Windingstad
Following retirement as a Wildlife Disease Specialist for the U.S. Fish and Service, Ron worked as a bird conservationist with the Minnesota State Office of the National Audubon Office where he initiated the Chimney Swift Conservation Program. Working with Boy Scouts, golf courses, ciy parks, corporations, and numerous bird-loving communities he helped construct more than 100 artificial chimney swift towers. Now no longer a fan of northern winters, and his four children grown, he takes his cue from the birds and migrates to central Mexico.
