Minnesota Caves: History and Lore, with Dr. Greg Brick

The Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center at Lake Elmo’s Sunfish Lake Park is excited to welcome Dr. Greg Brick, who will lecture on the history and lore of caves in Minnesota.

Minnesota has many caves, some known nationally. Carver’s was the earliest cave in what is now the US to be described in published literature after Jonathan Carver’s visit ten years before the Revolution. Fountain Cave was the birthplace of the capital city, St. Paul. Specialized uses included for beer, cheese, mushrooms, and as nightclubs. Mystery and Niagara are the state’s best known show caves. Far north, the violent waves of Lake Superior hammered out caves accessible only by kayak. Other caves were purely mythical.
