James Rock tells how ancestors used the moon, earthen architecture, and turtle shells to predict astronomical events with remarkable precision. Hoping for snow on the ground, Jim will share important stories about the snake mound formerly found in Afton and about other significant places along the St. Croix. Rivers are the reflection of the Spirit Road, the Milky Way. Whether using Western or Indigenous science, we are all watching, learning and trying to “read” the universe.

James Rock is a faculty member in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at UMN-Duluth and Director of Indigenous Programming whose research interest is Ethno-astronomy and Archeoastronomy. In 2014, Jim co-authored the book D(L)akota Star Map Constellation Guide and has co-published several journal articles on Dakota sacred mound and cave sites.
