Feminism, Freedom & Fashion

Presented by Washington County Historic Courthouse at Washington County Historic Courthouse

“Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world. It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood.” – Susan B. Anthony, February 2, 1896

More than any other invention, the bicycle was a catalyst for social change in general and women’s liberation in particular. Inspired by the current exhibition ‘Spokes & Folks: The Evolution of Bicycles and Trails in Washington County’ this 30-min illustrated talk by the exhibition’s curator and art historian Megan Arney Johnston will highlight the impact of bicycles on women’s rights, voting rights, and fashion.
