"Natural Occurrences" exhibition

Presented by ArtReach St. Croix at ArtReach St. Croix

With naturally-dyed batik textiles, sculptural ceramics and photography the push and pull of organic processes is central to this exhibition.  Plant life, water, rocks and landscapes offer rich inspiration, as well as source material, for the work of Emily Donovan, Ani Kasten and Lars Samuelsson, three distinctive local artists.
Emily Donovan (Minneapolis, MN) loves to travel, but her heart belongs to Minnesota. The state’s North Woods and the cycle of the seasons are both influential and essential to her batik art, which relies on wax and handmade dyes made from foraged materials. Donovan studied art history and visual art at the University of Minnesota with an emphasis in printmaking and painting. Her process of hand dyeing creates what she calls a “living mark,” tracking the movement and infusion of her pigments into paper fibers and encapsulating her experiences and discoveries in the outdoors.

Ani Kasten (Shafer, MN) is a ceramic artist. Her sculptural forms draw from natural and geological imagery, exploring the meeting point of natural phenomena and human influence. Kasten seeks to unearth the refined within the rough, the beauty in ugliness, creating forms that are imbued with extreme fragility yet exhibiting inner strength. Using the potter’s wheel and hand building techniques, she makes craggy vessels and rough forms with inclusions like rocks and wire. Kasten is a host for the nationally recognized St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour.

Lars Samuelsson (Hugo, MN) is a photographer. In addition to photographing 2 and 3d artwork, he has several ongoing photographic projects. His work in this exhibition is a black and white exploration of tree roots. These stark, gnarly photographs meditate on organic processes and natural spaces.  Prior to Hugo, Samuelsson lived in Rochester, NY where he received his MFA in photography from the Visual Studies Workshop at the State University of New York in Brockport.
