Travel with us from the St. Croix River Valley to tropical Costa Rica as we learn about our migratory bird community and local efforts to support habitat conservation along the way.
Many of the birds that visit our yards during the summer lead a fascinating double life. These birds make an amazing journey between summer in Minnesota and winter in Costa Rica and Central America. Patty Mueller, Board President of Tropical Wings, will speak about these tiny, brave travelers and local efforts to support migratory bird education and habitat conservation. Tropical Wings is a locally founded non-profit organization that has formed partnerships with parks and reserves in Costa Rica to promote the quality habitat of our shared migratory birds, including exchanges with park professionals from both countries. As a shared resource, these birds play a vital role in the web of life and depend on quality habitat along and at both ends of their migration to thrive. There are 55 species of birds that spend their summer months breeding in the valley and wintering in Costa Rica. Of the 55 species, 19 are considered conservation priorities.
This program is presented in partnership with the St. Croix Valley Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
