The Life of an Object: Stories, Meanings & Moments

Presented by Washington County Parks at Washington County Historic Courthouse

Learn how the artifacts in the Historic Courthouse archives have been preserved and collected through the years tell not only the story of the building itself, but are also a reflection of a time, people, and community.

For over 150 years, the Washington County Historic Courthouse has been a significant site in relation to government, law, and justice. The artifacts in the archive are not only a representation of the lives of those who lived and worked at the courthouse, they are also a reflection of the surrounding community.

The exhibition will include photographs and focus on objects such as jail registers and leg shackles used in the 1900s jail, a gavel and judges robe used in the courtroom, handcuffs and badges used by the Washington County Sheriff and sheriff’s wife, and office equipment such as a typewriter, stenotypes, ledgers and more. A Community “Show & Tell” section will highlight historical objects owned by area residents. Interactives will include mystery objects, a Make-Your-Own museum display, and more.
