Field to Studio: Outdoor Painters of Minnesota Members’ Fall Exhibit

The mission of Outdoor Painters of Minnesota (OPM) is to encourage and promote painting directly from nature. OPM provides regular opportunities for members to paint together, looks for ways to develop member skills, reputation, and seeks to raise awareness of the beauty found in nature through outdoor painting.

Field to Studio is an exhibit of plein air paintings and plein air studies with studio enlargements by

OPM members. Plein air painting is painting directly from life, typically the subject matter is landscape. Timing is important to the artist as light changes quickly throughout the day.

The purpose of the exhibit is to feature the best work of OPM members and to inspire and educate the public about our process and techniques of painting outdoors. The plein air paintings may be completed paintings done entirely on location, or they may be studies used as reference material to create larger paintings. Many artists will use painted tiles of color, geographic shapes, and even scribbles when creating field studies. These studies serves as a guide and the artist uses the memory of the location — sight, smells and even temperature — to recreate enlarged completed paintings.

Seize the Clay – recent work by The Phipps ceramics students and instructors.

The St. Croix Valley has a rich history of nurturing and supporting artists who work with clay. The Phipps Ceramics Studio is part of that tradition with an active program of classes and open studio opportunities for students of all ages and skill levels. Even during the most restrictive months of COVID, the Ceramics Studio remained safely open for former students to use independently, offering them a refuge from the stress and an opportunity to be creative.
